Carving out a rink on the lake at the cottage is not as easy as just stepping on to the lake and going though.
Here are 5 things that you need to do to make it safely happen.
1- Check that the ice is at least 8 inches thick.
2- Find a shaded area tucked away from the wind - you will be glad you did.
3- Clear the snow regularly - best to shovel right before you skate.
4- Drill a hole & use a submersible pump to flood your rink to smooth the surface.
5- Always flood your rink at night when temperatures are at their lowest.
It can be a lot of work, but it will be worth it.
